5 Steps to Overcoming Self Limiting Beliefs

by Primera Muthoni

Have you ever been in a room where you talked about your struggles, but no one seemed to believe you? I've also been in that situation, so I know how difficult it can be. One of the hardest things I've had to deal with is my own self-limiting beliefs. These negative thoughts and ideas have kept me from achieving my goals and reaching my full potential. It's important to realise that these limits usually come from inside ourselves, not from the outside.

Examples of common limiting beliefs are "I'm not good enough," "I'll never succeed," and "I'm too old to start something new." These beliefs inhibit personal development and prevent us from pursuing our passions and aspirations

When our own thoughts and beliefs get in the way of our progress, it can be very discouraging. But the good news is that we have the power to see these limiting ideas for what they are and change them. By doing this, we can get out of their grip and show what we're really capable of.

Here are my ideas on how to deal with it.

Step 1: Recognise your limiting beliefs:

The initial step in overcoming limiting beliefs is becoming conscious of them. Reflect on your thoughts, internal mental chatter, and behavioural patterns. Become aware of any negative or self-defeating beliefs that recur when you consider taking risks or leaving your comfort zone. Journaling, mindfulness practises, or engaging with a coach can help in recognising and uncovering these beliefs, such as "I'm not good enough" or "I have the skills and abilities to achieve my goals."

Step 2: Challenge and reframe your beliefs

After identifying your limiting beliefs, it is time to question their truth. Ask yourself, "Is this belief based on objective evidence, or is it the result of fear or past experiences?" Look for evidence and alternative perspectives that contradict your limiting beliefs. Reframe them as affirmative, empowering statements that support your aims and aspirations. Replace phrases such as "I'm not good enough" with "I have the skills and abilities to achieve my goals."

Step 3: Seek Assistance and Surround Yourself with Positive Influences:

Defeating limiting beliefs on your own is not always simple. A network of supportive friends, mentors, or like-minded individuals can provide encouragement, accountability, and new perspectives. Engage in affirmations, books, or motivational resources that reinforce a growth mindset and challenge your limiting beliefs.

Step 4: Take Action and Embrace Growth Recognising and re-framing your limiting beliefs is insufficient; action is essential.

Start by establishing modest, attainable objectives that will push you outside of your comfort zone. Each step you take towards your objectives will challenge your prior beliefs and demonstrate that you are capable of more than you once believed. Celebrate your accomplishments along the way, regardless of their size, and use them as fuel to propel you forward.

Step 5: Practise self-compassion and determination:

The journey to overcoming limiting beliefs requires self-compassion and perseverance. Recognise that setbacks and self-doubt may occur throughout this process, and be kind to yourself. Accept failure as a chance to develop and learn, and keep in mind that progress is rarely linear. Persevere, continue to challenge your beliefs, and acknowledge each step forward.

Identifying and overcoming limiting beliefs is a transformative process that enables us to overcome self-imposed limitations and realise our full potential. By recognising, challenging, and reframing these beliefs, we give ourselves the power to pursue our ambitions, achieve success, and live a satisfying existence. Choose to believe in your limitless potential, because your beliefs determine your reality. Embrace the journey of self-discovery and development, and observe as your newfound confidence propels you to extraordinary accomplishments.
